The difference between a hydrating regimen and a moisturizing regimen lies in the ingredients. Products that contain water or are water based can be hydrating for dehydrated skin and increase the water content of the skin. Water based products that contain humectants (hyaluronic acid, honey, glycerin) draw moisture from the air and bind to the skin. Dry skin, lacks oils (oil based ingredients) and needs to be moisturized.

Lotions are mostly water based formulas and add necessary hydration (water) to skin. While most lotions contain ingredients that seal moisture int the skin barrier, following up with a butter may still be needed in extreme cases.

The oil in a Butter based product seals in the moisture from the shower or additional water based products. If your skin’s lipid barrier has been disrupted or damaged, it may be harder to seal in moisture

How to make the most out of this information:

If your skin needs a little extra help this fall/winter season, apply your lotion and follow up with a butter or oil. Your skin will thank you and you’ll notice a difference.
